Triumph TR7 Books and Sources

The histories, club guides, factory papers, magazines, debates and results tables behind every page of this site, with what each is good for and how far to trust it.

Two later histories carry most of this site's story: AROnline's development story of the TR7, with its pages on the Lynx and the Broadside, and Aaron Severson's five-page history of the TR7 and TR8 on Ate Up With Motor, of 2012, which names its own sources. The TR Drivers Club's guide to the cars' numbers, which reproduces BL's production tables, is the backbone of the figures. Every source the pages cite is in the list below, each with its address where it has one, and each page lists its own sources at its foot.source 1source 2source 3

How the sources are graded

The label beside each source grades the kind of source it is, not every line in it. Primary sources were made at the time by the maker or by people who were there: BL's own papers, Motor Sport's tests and reports, the debates in Parliament and the American importer's owners' newsletter. Reference sources are later work done with care: the clubs' guides and registers, and the historians' articles. Database sources, such as the racingsportscars results tables, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked sources are leads: Wikipedia, and sites that seldom name their own sources. A page uses one only beside a stronger source, or by naming it in the sentence, and never for a figure on its own.source 4source 5source 6source 7

The maker's own papers

Three of British Leyland's own documents were read: the press release on the British drophead's structure and specification that Rover Triumph issued for its British launch in March 1980, which gives the factory's figures for both bodies; a Canadian brochure for the convertible, with engine figures of its own; and a BL Motorsport memo of December 1980 on a TR8 development car, which the Triumph Wedge Owners Association publishes. The specifications rest on the first two, beside the road tests.source 8source 9source 10

Magazines of the time

Motor Sport's free online archive is the main period record. Clive Richardson wrote its three looks at the coupé, the American preview of February 1975, the British launch of June 1976 and the Canley car of June 1979, and C.R. its report on the drophead in April 1980; Jeremy Walton wrote its rally features, among them the long report on the V8 of September 1978, and the magazine's rally reports and news pages follow the works team through 1976–81. Road & Track's first drive of the convertible and the TR8, in England in 1979, was read in the first page of the TR Drivers Club's reprint, the only one still online, and the American importer's newsletter gives the first race results of 1976. The road tests page lists every period test known and what of each was read.source 11source 4source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20source 21source 22

Parliament and broadcasting

Hansard records the Commons exchanges of 16 and 27 February 1978 on the closure of Speke No. 2, and BBC Liverpool's account of 2009, which quotes the BBC's Nationwide of 1978, sets Speke workers' words beside the industrial journalist Graham Turner's. The factories page rests on them.source 23source 24source 25

Clubs and their records

The TR Drivers Club supplied more of the research than any other single source: its identification and production guide, its register of the 20 works rally registrations with a page for each car, Graham Fountain's account of the Sprints and the club's survey of them, its articles on the Jubilee, the Le Mans car and the TR7s at Gaydon, and Simon Godrich's owner's checklist. The TR Register's guide to the TR7 and TR8 adds facts, performance figures and answers to owners' questions. Michael Hart's count of the Spider's build cards, published by the Triumph Wedge Owners Association, and Canley Classics' records of BL's experimental cars complete the list.source 3source 5source 26source 27source 28source 29source 30source 31source 32source 33source 34

Later accounts

Beyond the two histories, AROnline's obituary of Harris Mann reproduces his interview of 2005, and Motor Sport published John Davenport's tribute to Tony Pond in 2002 and a long interview with Fred Gallagher in 2019. CAR's obituary of 2010 gives Spen King's career. Graham Robson's history of the works Triumphs is cited only as Wikipedia quotes it, and IMCDb's list of screen appearances was read through an archived copy.source 1source 35source 36source 37source 2source 38source 39source 40source 41source 42
